School Story:
I attended the Boys and Girls Student Government Conference at Shaw University when I was President of the Student Council. At this conference, a young man named Prince told us that we were citizens of this country, entitled to all the rights and privileges thereof. We are not second class citizens and by law have the right to access all public facilities w/o relegation to a particular, drinking fountain, seat, door, bathroom, etc.
A few days after returning home from the conference, I decided to go to Bames' restaurant on Rte 70 in Barber Junction, enter the front door and place an order at the counter.
So I walked to the restaurant, and walked in the front door. (I had no strategic plan, sought no counsel or support - just exercising my rights).
When I walked through the door, everything stopped for several moments. The patrons froze in place, the lady at the counter froze, as did I. Jimmy Bame came up to me and said:
"Now boy, you know if you want something you have go to the window like you're supposed to".
As I began to explain my rights as a citizen, he said,
"Now boy, you know your momma works her".
Those words propelled me out the door and quickly back home, hoping my mother wouldn't find out about this. Had she lost her job, I probably would have faced a dreadful punishment.
Apparently, Jimmie never said anything to my mother about this. She never said a word to me about it.
Lesson learned about ideas, plans, strategy, support, back-up, etc.
