Robert "Bob" H. Phifer, 76, of DeKalb, died Monday, December 24, 2018, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

He was born on February 11, 1942, in Hayesville, North Carolina, the son of James and Daisy (Herbert) Phifer. 

Bob was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam War. He was employed by Northern Illinois University Police Department for 24 1/2 years and was the first African American police officer in DeKalb County. He was a member of Crossroads Community Church, formerly Victory Baptist, and was an active member and Deacon. Bob enjoyed his retirement by doing volunteer work.

He is survived by his son, Andrew Phifer of DeKalb; one sister, Mary Herbert of DeKalb; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wallace Phifer; and two sisters, Hazel Phifer and Mona Faye. 

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Crossroads Community Church in DeKalb, with Pastor John Miller officiating. Private Graveside Services will be held at a later date at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb, with military honors by American Legion Post 66.
